Indian Captain Smit Machchhar Injured in Flydubai Cockpit Attack; Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia

A Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after a serious confrontation reportedly broke out inside the cockpit, leaving Indian captain Smit Machchhar injured.

Flight FZ1073 was carrying 174 passengers when the incident occurred on September 30. According to reports, the co-pilot, identified as an Omani national, allegedly attacked and stabbed Captain Machchhar during the flight. Israeli officials said the incident may have involved an attempt to take control of the aircraft, although the exact circumstances and motive remain under investigation.

Captain Opens Cockpit Door After Being Injured

Despite sustaining injuries, Captain Smit Machchhar reportedly managed to open the cockpit door. This allowed passengers and crew members to enter the cockpit and help restrain the attacker.

The aircraft reportedly experienced a rapid loss of altitude during the confrontation, adding to the emergency situation onboard. Passengers and crew members intervened as the situation unfolded.

Two other Flydubai pilots who were travelling onboard subsequently took control of the aircraft and helped divert it safely to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The aircraft landed safely, and the passengers were later provided with arrangements to continue their journey to Tel Aviv.

Indian Pilot Receives Praise

Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, has received widespread recognition following the incident. Reports state that he joined Flydubai as a captain in 2022 after spending around 11 years with SpiceJet.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly praised Machchhar for his actions during the emergency. However, the sequence of events and the exact role played by each person onboard remain subject to the ongoing investigation.

Investigation Underway

Both pilots were taken to a hospital in Tabuk following the incident. Flydubai said the aircraft was successfully secured by its crew and landed safely, while stressing that the underlying reasons and motives behind the confrontation were not yet known.

Authorities are continuing to investigate what happened inside the cockpit, including the circumstances surrounding the attack and the events that led to the emergency diversion.

The incident has raised renewed attention on cockpit security and aviation safety as authorities work to establish the complete sequence of events.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities gather more information.
