Odisha Battles Unusual October Heat as Temperatures Soar; Relief Likely with Rain and Thunderstorms

Odisha Battles Unusual October Heat as Temperatures Soar; Relief Likely with Rain and Thunderstorms Bhubaneswar: Odisha is witnessing an unusual spell of heat in October, with residents facing uncomfortable daytime temperatures even as the state moves deeper into the post-monsoon season. Instead of the pleasant weather generally associated with autumn, several parts of the state are experiencing hot and humid conditions. The change in weather has been particularly noticeable after the recent monsoon activity weakened. With clearer skies and reduced rainfall, daytime temperatures have remained high across several parts of Odisha. Hot and Humid Conditions Continue The ongoing heat has affected normal life, particularly during the afternoon hours. Urban residents are also experiencing uncomfortable nights as temperatures remain relatively high. Weather conditions can vary significantly across districts, but the overall pattern has been one of persistent warmth following the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon. Recent weather data also show that Odisha received 29% excess rainfall during the 2026 southwest monsoon season, making it one of the notable rainfall years for the state. However, rainfall activity has reduced considerably with the end of the monsoon season. Thunderstorms May Bring Some Relief There could be some relief from the heat in the coming days. The IMD’s Odisha Meteorological Centre has issued warnings for thunderstorms and lightning on October 6, 7 and 8, indicating the possibility of localized weather activity over parts of the state. Such thunderstorms and associated cloud cover may temporarily bring down temperatures in affected areas. However, widespread heavy rainfall is not currently indicated in the state-wide warning outlook. According to the latest IMD warning, no major weather warning is in place for Odisha from October 9 to October 12. Weather Watch Continues The unusual October heat has once again highlighted the changing pattern of weather across Odisha. While the state has experienced substantial rainfall during the 2026 monsoon season, the post-monsoon transition has brought a sharp reduction in rain and a return of hot conditions. Residents are advised to remain cautious during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated and follow local weather advisories, particularly when thunderstorms and lightning are forecast. For now, Odisha can expect some temporary relief through localized thunderstorms and cloud cover, but a sustained return to cooler autumn conditions may take more time.
