Deep Depression Over South Odisha Weakens Gradually; Heavy Rainfall Continues, 1,154 Evacuated in Malkangiri Bhubaneswar: The deep depression over south Odisha and adjoining areas is gradually weakening, but its impact continues to bring heavy rainfall to several parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of very heavy rainfall in Odisha on September 25, followed by heavy rainfall on September 26. Deep Depression Moving North-Northwest According to the latest weather update, the deep depression has been moving in a north-northwesterly direction. The system is expected to weaken further as it continues to move inland. The IMD had earlier reported that the system was centred over south Odisha and adjoining north coastal Andhra Pradesh, near Koraput. It was forecast to gradually weaken into a depression and continue moving north-northwestwards over the following 24 hours. Heavy Rainfall Continues Across Odisha Despite the weakening system, several parts of Odisha are still experiencing significant rainfall. The IMD has issued a very heavy rainfall warning for September 25, while heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the state on September 26. Thunderstorms, lightning and squally weather are also possible during this period. South Odisha and parts of western Odisha remain particularly vulnerable due to the continuing rainfall activity. Malkangiri Faces Difficult Situation Malkangiri has been among the districts significantly affected by the persistent rainfall. Several villages have reportedly been impacted by waterlogging and rising water levels. According to the information available from local authorities, around 58 villages have been affected, while 1,154 people have been evacuated to safer locations as a precautionary measure. The administration has been monitoring vulnerable areas and taking steps to ensure the safety of residents in areas affected by flooding and heavy rainfall. Government and Rescue Teams on Alert The Odisha government had already put disaster-response teams on standby ahead of the system’s movement across the state. The Chief Minister directed departments and district administrations to maintain a high level of preparedness, with emphasis on protecting lives and property. NDRF and Fire Services personnel, along with 33 ODRAF teams, were kept ready in vulnerable districts, while additional teams were placed on reserve. District and block-level control rooms were also made operational around the clock. Fishermen Advised to Stay Away From Sea The weather system has also affected sea conditions along the Odisha coast. The IMD reported rough to very rough seas and strong winds in coastal areas, with cautionary signals maintained at Odisha ports. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until conditions improve. Situation Expected to Improve Gradually The IMD expects the deep depression to weaken further as it moves away from the coast. However, rainfall activity is likely to continue for another day or two in parts of Odisha. People living in low-lying and vulnerable areas are advised to remain alert, avoid flooded roads and follow instructions issued by local authorities. Residents should also rely on official IMD and district administration updates for the latest weather information. With the weather system weakening gradually, the focus now remains on managing the continuing rainfall, monitoring water levels and ensuring the safe return of evacuated residents once conditions become favourable.
