Rain Likely to Dampen Rath Yatra in Odisha as Low-Pressure Area Develops

Rain Likely to Dampen Rath Yatra in Odisha as Low-Pressure Area Develops The festive spirit of Odisha’s Rath Yatra may be accompanied by widespread rainfall this year, as weather experts predict the formation of a fresh low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. According to various weather models, a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop around July 14 or 15, which could later intensify into a low-pressure area. Meteorologists indicate that atmospheric conditions over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coast are becoming increasingly favorable for the system’s formation. As a result, rainfall activity across Odisha is expected to increase significantly from July 13, coinciding with the Rath Yatra celebrations. Over the next three days, many parts of the state are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, while some districts may experience thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and heavy showers. The Regional Meteorological Centre has already issued weather alerts, advising people to remain cautious during outdoor activities and festival gatherings. Meanwhile, the situation at the Hirakud Dam remains under control. Floodwater is currently being released through 10 gates, but officials have clarified that there is no immediate flood threat to downstream areas. The released water is expected to reach Mundali in Cuttack within the next 36 hours. Since no heavy rainfall has been recorded in the river catchment areas so far, water levels in major rivers are gradually receding. Authorities have urged devotees, tourists, and district administrations to closely monitor weather updates during the Rath Yatra period. While the expected rainfall may provide relief from the humid weather, it could also affect traffic movement, religious processions, and public gatherings. With thousands of devotees set to participate in one of Odisha’s biggest festivals, the state administration remains on alert to ensure both safety and smooth conduct of the celebrations despite the changing weather conditions.
